Burger and Meatball Sauce

A big leap above the standard ketchup, this is one of my favorite burger sauces, but it's a great meatball sauce too.

Though somewhat of a riff on the vintage grape jelly and chili sauce meatballs we all know and love, I patterned this version after a burger sauce once used by an old favorite and sadly now gone, little bitty, local burger joint in Biloxi.

There was nothing particularly unusual about their flame-cooked burgers really, but it was the sauce that really made them ultra delicious to me. For many years I had fond memories of it, and thought I'd give a hand at trying to make one somewhat like it. This recipe was the result. It makes about 4 cups, perfect for loads of burgers, or several pounds of meatballs, though it can certainly be reduced.

By the way, if you are in need of a great homemade meatball, here's my basic recipe. Many readers make up multiple batches of this recipe to put up in the freezer so they always have frozen, but homemade, meatballs at the ready!

You can use any kind of jam or jelly, including the classic grape jelly. Today, I'm using one of my favorite pepper jelly brands, Mrs G's, in the Jalapeno Garlic Lime flavor, Mrs G's jellies are made in small batches and hand crafted, so they're much different than the typical grocery market pepper jelly. No, they didn't pay me to say that, I just love the product! Their pepper jellies are good on toast or a biscuit indeed, but I love using them in recipes.

A simple blend of flavors and easy to throw together. Here's how to make my burger and meatball sauce.

In a large saucepan, saute minced onion in cooking oil until tender; add garlic and cook another minute. Add ketchup and all remaining ingredients, bring to a boil, stirring regularly until well blended, reduce to simmer and cook until thickened to desired consistency. Remove from heat, taste and adjust seasonings as desired.

Use as a burger sauce in place of ketchup, or pour over cooked meatballs and gently toss.
