Ranch Oyster Crackers

I think that pretty much everybody is now familiar with the seasoned snack crackers marinated in a blend of oil, dry ranch seasoning and a few flavor enhancements.

They often start with saltines these days like my Firecracker Saltines, but did you know that they actually originated with oyster crackers? Yes! Oyster crackers are not just for oyster stew or soups. They make a nice, crunchy, comforting snack too.

Folks have moved on even further to include a wider variety of crackers and forms of seasonings, bumping it up with red pepper flakes and a little cayenne, lemon pepper, Creole or Cajun seasoning, even Worcestershire.

I've seen this base recipe used across the net, as more of a snack mix like you see with Chex Mix recipes, that includes saltines, oyster crackers, sometimes both and often with goldfish crackers too, and the addition of Cheez-Its, cereals, bagel chips and pretzels - with the same seasoning.

I love the saltines when I want to serve them with assorted hard cheeses and cold cuts, or along with a chicken, egg or shrimp salad, or soups, stews and chilis, of course! They are a great potluck carry along too.

The oyster crackers though? They still stand supreme for snacking in my humble opinion, or even to use as a salad crouton topper!

I have been carrying a zippered bag of these to the grandkid's games here lately. For some reason, when I'm watching a game I feel like I need a little snack, and these are perfect!

Here's how I make them.
As always, full recipe text with measurements and instructions, as well as a printable document, are a little bit further down the page. Just swipe or scroll past the step-by-step pictures below.
Preheat oven to 250 degrees F.

Here's what you'll need. Oyster crackers, a packet of ranch seasoning, or use your own homemade version, dried parsley flakes, garlic and onion powder and dill weed.

Measure it all out in a bowl.

Whisk to emulsify.

Pour onto the oyster crackers and immediately toss to coat all the crackers.

Transfer to baking sheet and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring several times.

Let cool completely.

Yum, yum! Dig in y'all, or store in airtight container and enjoy randomly as a snack, put them over your salads and of course, tossed in soups!
