Do you love a green bean casserole? It has a following for sure, but it has just as many haters I guess, though I just don't understand.

I guess it's the fact that it has been a part of my holiday meals all of my life and frankly, a tradition, so I've always loved it. Though no holiday goes by without this dish - in some form - appearing on the dinner table, I don't reserve it only for holidays either.

You do realize that there are many different ways to make it, right? I've actually got a few variations right here on Deep South Dish in fact!

  • Of course, there's the classic Green Bean Casserole, typically made with French style green beans, French-fried onions and cream soup.
  • Green Bean Casserole with the addition of almonds and a buttery crumb topping.
  • Green Bean Casserole made with fresh green beans, or canned cut green beans, mushrooms, French fried onions and a homemade cream sauce.
  • Cheesy Green Bean Casserole with bacon, cream soup, Velveeta and topped with stuffing.
  • And now, this creamy, cheesy Green Bean Supreme!
I have no doubt in my mind that there will be even more variations appear on this website in the future, because I do love a good green bean casserole and I love a variety.

This is my variation of a copy of a cookbook recipe clipping I have from many years ago, and of which I didn't ever know the original source and haven't really had time to research either. I suppose it can be found in any number of older community cookbooks. The unexpected addition of cream cheese really makes it stand out as different, and it's certainly a delicious alternative. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Here's how to make this Green Bean Supreme Casserole.

Butter or use non-stick spray with a 2 to 2-1/2-quart casserole dish; set aside. Sauté the bacon in a skillet.


Cook bacon until fat is rendered.


When the bacon is slightly browned, use a slotted spoon to remove it to drain on a paper towel.


Leave drippings in skillet and add 1 tablespoon butter to the drippings.


Cook onion just until tender, about 3 minutes, stirring regularly, add garlic and cook another minute. Add cream cheese and cream of mushroom to the onions. I prefer the "Great for Cooking" version of the cream soup with most casseroles, but The Cajun picked it up for me and grabbed a healthy request version accidentally.


Blend together well.


Stir in milk, salt, pepper, Creole or Cajun seasoning, if using, and soy sauce.

I love these kitchen-sliced style green beans (#ad), although I have to get them via Amazon because I haven't seen them locally anywhere I shop. I put mine on a subscription. The original recipe for this dish actually called for French-style green beans, so you can certainly use those, or even just a canned, cut green bean, but I already have these in the pantry, so I made that adaptation.


What is the big deal about kitchen sliced? Well... I don't know for sure, but the company claimed it's because of the special type of bean Green Giant uses, and that they are cut at an angle "to bring out all their flavor and freshness." 

do know that I prefer the kitchen sliced and they do taste better to me🤷🏻‍♀️so as long as I can get them on my monthly subscription I will! Turns out, they've also been around a long time, about 60 years, which might be why they are getting harder to find.

Anyway, add green beans and water chestnuts, if using. I didn't have any but I do like them in this dish.


Gently fold that together.


Add 1/2 of the shredded cheese. I'm using the tail end of a bag of "fiesta blend" I needed to use up, which is a mix of Monterey jack with cheddar and includes some Mexican cheeses also. Use whatever you've got!


And 1/3 cup of the French-fried onions; stir to coat. This is where you should give it a taste and adjust seasonings as needed. I see lots of reviews across the internet where folks complain about something they made from a website being bland. Well, in my opinion that's on the cook! You should always, always taste a recipe that you make because that's what it's going to taste like when it's finished. Taste, then adjust.


Transfer to prepared casserole dish. The skillet I used won't fit into my Ninja dual oven, so I transferred the skillet to the 2-quart pan that came with the oven. If you double this, you'll need a 4-quart, or a 9 x 13-inch dish.


Top with remaining cheese and reserved bacon.


Add remaining fried onions.


As mentioned, I'm using my new Ninja double oven (#ad) today! Love this thing and really the only complaint I have is that I wish it were a little bit wider to accommodate a baker. Or an oven safe skillet with handles.


Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes, uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes, or until heated through and bubbly, and casserole is lightly browned on top. 


Dig in!
