Pizza Pasta Salad

Hey, y'all should be very proud of me!! I have managed to post more than two recipes in August so far. Seems Grandma Mary needed to get her back-to-school routine going too I guess. :) Just in time too, because fall is right around the corner now, and I've still got some summer left to share yet!

I love a good pasta salad in the summer and I sure can make a meal of this one.

Homemade Chili Sauce

A homemade substitute for store-bought chili sauce made with tomato sauce and paste, lemon juice and a mix of seasonings.

Homemade Chili Sauce

I was already nearly done with stacking groceries on the belt at the grocery store, when I remembered that a couple of recipes that I wanted to make use bottled chili sauce. Doesn't that always happen?

A quick glance near the checkout told me it wasn't gonna be close enough at hand to just do a run and grab, so rather than having to get back in a line for a couple of items (and probably finding another handful of things I really didn't need along the way), I decided I'd just go home and try to make up my own homemade version.

Old School Oven Barbecued Chicken

An old school, low and slow way to cook up a barbecue sauced chicken in the oven, the way that grandma used to make it.

Old School Oven Barbecued Chicken

This oven barbecue chicken is a great way to get indoor barbecue flavor when the grill is covered under snow, it's just too darned cold or you're too tired to fool with grilling.

And yes, I realize that pouring commercially bottled barbecue sauce over chicken and baking it is absolutely deliciously easy, this recipe is the old school way of baking up a barbecued chicken dish.

Wedge Salad with Homemade Comeback Thousand Island Dressing

I'm guessing that just about every southerner has a recipe in their recipe box for Thousand Island Dressing - and every one of them just a little bit different.  It's a pretty simple dressing really - just a mix of mayonnaise, add in some ketchup or chili sauce, throw in some chopped sweet pickles or pickle relish and a bit of chopped egg and you'll have a perfectly fine Thousand Island dressing.

Ain't No Thing Chicken

A combination of chili sauce and hot sauce with cider vinegar, garlic, ginger & Cajun seasoning, makes for a nice spicy kick in these chicken drumsticks. Try it on wings too!

Ain't No Thing Chicken Drumsticks

These drumsticks were inspired by the Ain't No Thing Chicken Wing recipe from fellow native Mississippian, Miss Martha Foose.  She's been called Mississippi's Martha, and she's the author of the cookbook Screen Doors and Sweet Tea: Recipes and Tales from a Southern Cook {affil limk}and her newest one, A Southerly Course.

If you're the kind of person who likes to collect and read cookbooks, you'll love both of these because they are just beautiful cookbooks. Foose currently teaches gourmet cooking class at Viking Cooking School, the home of dream Viking ovens and stoves to pine over. Yes! My dream oven, and Mississippi made.

Spicy Crab Martini

West Indies Crab Salad or plain lump crab, infused with a spicy chili sauce, lemon and a citrus vodka, served over sliced avocado, for a great party appetizer for adults. Makes a great one-bite shooter pass around too.

Spicy Crab Martini

These are fantastic as an appetizer for a dinner party and can also be done in small shot glasses as crab shooters, meant to be consumed in one bite.

Super spicy, they actually do contain vodka, so make sure that all of your guests imbibe in alcoholic beverages first before serving them, or you can choose to go non-alcoholic.

Add chunks of avocado, toothpick speared olives, and insert a small cocktail spoon or fork before serving. Also excellent when made with boiled shrimp.

Easy Cocktail Sauce

We eat a lot of seafood here in the Deep South and we do love, and expect a good cocktail sauce to go with it. This is a blend that is perfect for raw oysters, boiled shrimp or any fried seafood, such as fried shrimp, southern fried catfish, or even deep fried oysters.

Classic Southern Style Baked Beans

Classic Southern Style Baked Beans

I have been cooking my baked beans pretty much this same way since the 70s. And all those years I have been doing them in this old Pyrex dish.

Well... that is until one day I dropped it and broke it. This was a wedding gift back then and I can't tell you how many potlucks that little carrier basket has been to over the years! {I told y'all I had some old dishes, though I guess the politically correct way to say that would be "vintage."}

Sticky Sweet and Spicy Asian Style Oven Baked Wings

This wing marinade made with honey, hoisin and chili sauce and a touch of citrus, produces a sticky sweet chicken wing with just a tad bit of spicy heat and I guarantee you'll be lickin' your fingers on this one!

Give it a try and tell me how much you love 'em y'all.

I highly recommend using a Non-Stick Aluminum Foil when preparing wings in the oven.

Crispy Southern Fried Hot Wings

I love wings. Any kind!

Adding to the repertoire of my wing collection here on Deep South Dish are these Crispy Southern Fried Hot Wings to add to your party fare!

If you don't have a deep fryer (#ad), make do with a deep pot filled with oil, or try them in your air fryer! While you can certainly shallow fry them, deep frying cooks them quickly and with much less absorption of oil

Sour Cream Horseradish Sauce

A blend of mayonnaise, sour cream, horseradish, chili sauce and Cajun seasoning, to use as a dipper, a spread on sandwiches such as my fabulous roast beef sliders, or as a wing dipper.

Sour Cream Horseradish Sauce

I developed this sauce specifically to serve with my Roast Beef Sliders, made from a 3 Envelope and Picante Slow Cooker Pot Roast, but it is equally as delicious on a fried egg BLT sandwich, a turkey club, classic patty melts, or really any sandwich made with deli meats. It really makes that sandwich pop y'all! It's also great as a dipping sauce for hot wings. Not overly hot, but you can certainly bump up the heat to your own taste.

Here's how to make it.
