Social Media Roundup Soups and Stews 1

A collection of soups and stews shared on social media, that you may have missed!

Social Media Roundup Soups and Stews 1

Man has this been a crazy winter or what?

While we in the Deep South have had some extended freezes, as I watch footage shared across weather media, I wonder how some of y'all deal with that kind of weather in your day to day lives. Watching cars and trucks uncontrollably slipping and sliding on icy roads, slamming into buildings and each other like little matchbox cars, it scares me to death!

And then there's something some of us are experiencing that our elders never really prepared us for.

Social Media Roundup Comfort Food Favorites 3

Comfort Food Favorites 3

This sure has been a crazy month in the Deep South with all of these winter storms rolling through. We have readers from all across the country so I know that a lot of you have been affected by them too. Even here in the Deep South we've had multiple freezes lasting well into the day even, and that's highly unusual for us.

Be safe, stay warm and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

We've been sharing some good comfort meals on social media lately, so we're continuing that and if you're looking for some belly warming foods, here's a summary of what we've shared recently.

Social Media Roundup Comfort Food Favorites 2

Social Media Roundup - Comfort Food Favorites 2

Y'all. I can't believe we are halfway through the month of January already!

As much as it seems that life stands still when you're young, I can assure you that when you hit "a certain age" it flies. Seems like my grandchildren were toddlers yesterday and here they are teens and preteens.

I know that a lot of you are on hiatus from your favorite cooking blogs - but don't forget about us!! We're still plugging along and with this crazy weather if you're looking for some great comfort food options to warm those bellies, we've been sharing some good stuff over on social media!

Social Media Roundup New Year Menu Collections

Ever wonder why many Southerners eat certain foods to ring in the new year? Or, what are the traditional foods that make up a Southern New Year's menu and how they came to be?  Read on to find out AND grab some great recipes too, straight from Deep South Dish!

I learned when I shared the image above on my Facebook page, that not every single Southerner today buys into the traditions, and they sure let me know.

That's okay for them, but some of us stand by these rituals year after year as the New Year rolls in!

I'm not a particularly superstitious person myself, but somehow I just don't seem right unless I have some kind of pork on New Year's Day along with some kind of greens or cabbage and always black-eyed peas and cornbread. Besides y'all. It's all so tasty!

For me, it's a bit of a nod to those who came before me, as well as a nod to our future generations that when things seem dire, there is always hope.

I've provided the history, well as I know it, as to why these things are traditional, along with a variety of my classic recipes for each of those elements.

Just tap or click on the photo above or this link to get your choices for your New Year's Day pork roast, greens, black-eyed peas and cornbread - there are a lot of recipes, just scroll through them to find your own favorite!

Of course can't miss the party before too!

I've gathered up some of my favorite appetizers for New Year's Eve including Grape Jelly Sausages or Meatballs, Shrimp and Grits, Sausage Cheese Balls, Green Chile Cheese Squares, Shrimp CocktailCrab Stuffed PotatoesSausage Hanky Pankies, Chex Mix and much much more, including the "after party" things you might need, and for convenience, some of the next day recipes as well.

Tap on the champagne glasses above or this link to check out all of the New Year's Eve goodness!

Happy New Year y'all!

Cabbage Soup Round-up

Cabbage Soup Round-up

I love cabbage cooked all kinds of different ways, but I especially love cabbage central soups.

Unfortunately, my husband aka The Cajun, isn't as big a fan of it as me, meaning when I make any kind of cabbage dish, well... it's all for me.

That doesn't stop me though y'all, and neither should it stop you.

If you love a certain dish the rest of your family isn't interested in, I say treat yourself occasionally and make it. Just for you. The rest of the family can get along just fine on leftovers or sandwiches, trust me.

Unfortunately, although I do continue to share to social media on a regular basis, it seems that quite a few folks have left those venues these days. Because of that, I'm publishing an occasional summary of those roundups here on the website for Deep South Dish readers who primarily follow the website via email alerts.

This will give you a chance to catch up!

Social Media Roundup SUMMER 1 - What You Missed

Information you get from a recipe website is a little different from other sites. Although sometimes recipes are updated with revised techniques or updated pictures, recipes aren't a one and done type of thing. They really do stand the test of time.

I have folks who have been following Deep South Dish for years and rely on some of my older published posts for their regular meal rotation!

While I have an email alert that goes out whenever I post new recipes to the website, in case you didn't know, social media is where I have shared daily roundups for a lot of the past recipes. Unfortunately, although I do continue to share there on a daily basis, it seems that quite a few folks have left social media these days.

Because of that, I thought that I'd publish here on the website an occasional summary of things that I have shared on social media recently, for those who primarily follow the website via email alerts. This will give you a chance to revisit some of the previous content from Deep South Dish that you may have missed, or even forgotten about!

Ribs!

I love ribs of any kind!

Put a few delicately smoked ribs that have been pampered over for hours on end in front of me, and I'll gobble them up for sure!

I'm just a home cook though, so I'm just not likely to be the one to stand over that wood fired smoker to make them. I'll leave that business to the experts.

Baked Ham Collection

A collection of baked hams from the classic southern favorite glazed with brown sugar and mustard with cola, to old school pineapple, apple cider, whisky glazed and more, all from Deep South Dish!

Baked Ham Collection

I'm not one to be married to one ham recipe, though my favorite for many years and still today is the old school cola with brown sugar and mustard. My version has also become a favorite of many of you!

Truth is, I've even played around with that one over the years too.

One thing for certain is that a baked ham is not limited to the holidays for me. Truth is, I bake one every couple of months, rather than to buy sliced deli ham and for one, I want that ham bone for some beans!
